What are Sleep Disorders?

Sleep disorders involve problems with the quality, timing, or amount of sleep, which can lead to daytime distress and impaired functioning. These conditions are common and treatable.

Treatment Options

Treatment varies based on the type of sleep disorder and may include sleep hygiene education, behavioral therapy, lifestyle changes, and medication.

Trazodone:

commonly prescribed for sleep initiation and maintenance

Doxepin
(Silenor):

used for maintenance insomnia

Lunesta
(eszopiclone):

a prescription sleep aid that helps with both sleep onset and staying asleep throughout the night

Hydroxyzine:

antihistamine with sedating effects used for short-term insomnia

Gabapentin:

can reduce anxiety and improve sleep continuity

Belsomra
(suvorexant):

targets brain pathways that regulate wakefulness and is used for treating both sleep onset and maintenance insomnia

Melatonin:

a natural hormone used to adjust sleep-wake cycles

Ambien
(zolpidem):

a fast-acting sedative often prescribed to help individuals fall asleep quickly; usually for short-term use
